A Scary Walkway

There are many people around the world who sometimes get bored with their dull everyday existence and are willing to try something new and exciting, but few of them are attracted by the idea of trying something that might turn into their final experience,at least in this existence. Those individuals who never search looking for danger can satisfy their hunger for extreme situations in many ways, one of them being the crossing of the world’s most dangerous walkways, and if they have this strong desire, then ‘El Caminito del Rey’(The King’s Little Pathway)is included in their itineraries while it’s still in its
present condition. The walkway was built between 1901 and 1905 to allow the workers at two hydroelectric power plants to crioss the steep walls of a narrow gorge in El Chorro,in the province of Malaga. The walkway, which is 1 meter in width and rises over 100 meter above the river below, received its present name after King Alfonso XIII crossed it for the inauguration of a dam in 1921.It is hard to believe that any person, king or not, would dare to venture into this pathway nowadays, when it is deteriorated by the merciless passage of time, which caused many concrete parts of the original walkway to collapse, this turning this path into an extremely dangerous one,and I think even with
solid security equipment it takes a lot of courage to cross it from beginning to end The impressive and at the same time scary pathway took its tribute of human lives on several occasions, and after two fatal accidents the local government closed both entrances in 2000;meanwhile its deterioration level increased,so nowadays the movies made by those who managed to cross this walkway recently are truly breathtaking and at the same time scarier than any horror movie;those who lived this incredible experience certainly find it hard to express the feelings it created to them.I guess they felt a combination of astonishment at the majestic beauty of the gorge and pure fright when looking down at the abyss, especially in those portions of the path in which nothing remained but huge gaps. Anyway, after more than 100 years since its building El Caminito del Rey is finally going to be renovated, and at the same time many of its original features will be preserved. This means that many tourists will finally be able to cross it safely and be amazed by it.Until then, the wisest thing to do is to watch images of the walkway in its present state and just imagine what it would be like to be there!
