Many people associate the consumption of one glass of wine,especially red,per day,with health,but recent studies indicate that beer has many positive effects as well. Beer and wine are by far the most consumed alcoholic drinks in many parts of the world,and until recently wine was considered beneficial for health,but beer’s reputation of a healthy drink keeps on increasing lately due to several studies which identified new properties of this ancient drink: 1.Beer reduces the risk of heart disease - All alcoholic drinks,includingbeer,increase the level of ‘good’ cholesterol(HDL),reduce the level of ‘bad’ cholesterol(LDL) and make the blood thinner,thus reducing the risk of having a heart attack or a stroke.The moderate consumption of beer,which means one bottle of 330 ml a day for women and two bottles for men,was associated with a low risk of type 2 diabetes and the improvement of cerebral functions for older people. 2.It offers unique benefices to women regarding blood pressure – A study made on over 70.000 women aged between 25-42
tried to establish the relationship between alcohol consumption and hypertension.The conclusion was that women who drank beer in moderate quantities had lower blood pressure compared to those who drank wine or other alcoholic drinks. 3..It contributes to the prevention of the occurrence of kidney stones and it increases bone density – Another study,this time made on men,indicated that those who consumed beer presented a low risk of having kidney stones compared to those who chose other alcoholic drinks,probably because of the diuretic effect and the high content of water in beer.Other studies indicated that certain substances from hop could slow down the loss of calcium from the bones,preventing the formation of stones. 4.It contains minerals,vitamins and fibers – a 330 ml blonde beer contains little less than a gram of fibers,and a dark beer a little over a gram.Blonde beer usually contains more B vitamin,and a 330 ml beer also contains more calcium,magnesium and silicon,which is an essential antioxidant,than a glass of wine. All these discoveries indicates that beer,which is my favorite drink,has many positive effects on health,and so does wine,of course,but only if consumed with moderation.Cheers!
