The Amazon Rainforest:a Desperate Cry For Help
A few days ago I received an e-mail from an organisation called Avaaz which asked me to sign a petition against a new law voted by Brazilian Congress which allows land owners to resort to massive deforestations of the Amazon rainforest.Avaaz,an organisation which is involved in different and vital causes meant to prevent those who want to exploit the resources of our planet at the expense of its health and implicitly our health, asked me in this e-mail to sign the petition and send the link further to my friends, which of course I did, hoping that some of them will join this cause and increase the number of those who support this extremely important cause.
Before reading the content of this petition, some people might say:Wel,this isn't my problem,I have much more important things on my mind, and what's happening in the Amazon rainforest doesn't affect me at all, since I live in Romania, for example, thousands of miles away from Brazil, why should I care? However,if they have the patience to read the mail,I'm sure most of them will change their opinion, especially when they find out that the Amazon rainforest is vital for life on Earth since this incredibly diverse ecosistem produces 20% of the oxygen on our planet, and thus it also represents a key factor for the diminishing of the terrible effects of global warming.
I also found out from Avaaz that Brazil made significant progress in the last decade concerning the preservation of the natural environment, and the rate of deforestation was diminished with 78% between 2004 and 2011 thanks to some very inteligent environmental policies and some strict laws and the monitoring through satellite of huge areas of forest in a succesful effort to prevent it from being cut down.Unfortunately,if the new law is adopted all those achievements will be utterly useless and the massive deforestation that will follow will have disastrous and most likely irreversible consequences on the environment.Think about the so many unique species in the Amazon rainforest that will be extinct, and also the tribes who try to preserve their culture and unique style of life unaltered by the so-called 'civilisation',that will also disappear, and you will have a pretty accurate picture of the tragedy which may strike that huge area and that will eventually affect us all.
Luckily it still isn't too late to take action, and from what I read there is a person which has the right of veto against this cruel law,and that person is Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff,to which the petition is personally addressed. It looks like her decisive intervention will stop this potential catastrophe from becoming a horrible reality,so the more people sign the petition, the more powerful the message will be,and I'm convinced the Brazilian president will do the right thing and exert its veto to stop the destruction of the Amazon rainforest.Anyway,I feel better after knowing that I also signed this petition;it may not mean too much, but at least I know that I,together with millions of other people from all over the world, support this noble cause.Let's hope that all these efforts are not in vain and the magnificent Amazon rainforest will be saved from total devastation.
